Products » Bromeliads » Aechmea and Neoregelia

Aechmea and Neoregelia tend to be the bromeliads that have thicker more leathery leaves, are more sun tolerant and will often have spines along the edge of the leaves. These groups contain quite large varieties such as Aechmea blanchetiana, as well as mini bromeliads such as neoregelia lilliputiana.

Neoregelia are noted for their variety in leaf colour and markings. As well as intense individual colours they will often have stripes and spots across there leaves in a variety of colours. As Neos approach flowering, the central rosette of the plant will usually flatten out and central colour will intensify. The flowers of the Neos tend to be fairly insignificant but quite attractive flowers that appear in the central well of the plant. There are some that actually have a slight fragrance.

Aechmeas tend to have a more upright shape with often spectacular flowers that extend up out of the central well. Their leaves come in a range of colours from pale greens to silver and vibrant reds. Flowers will stay on the plant for several months, maintaining much of their colour. They often produce berries that are actually edible.

Both of these groups of bromeliads have been heavily hybridised which can make it quite difficult to identify exactly what some hybrid plants are. Both varieties are just as happy in a pot as they are in the tops of trees as epiphytes.
